Page title: Donato — The Complete Corpus of Sources for ISI-CNV

This page collects the entire corpus of primary and secondary sources on Alfred d'Hont «Donato» (1845-1900), organized by relevance and type. It is the documentary reference for ISI-CNV training worldwide.

The Paret Method reports Donato's method in contemporary practice — not as archaeology, but as a living system. These sources document every aspect: technique, physiology, effects, eyewitness accounts, history of persecutions, and the transmission chain.

The corpus of sources: hierarchy of authority

First-level sources: Donato in first person

  1. Le Magnétisme (journal, 1880-1886) — 104+ issues. Donato writes, answers questions, publishes accounts of the fascinated («Les Donatisés peints par eux-mêmes»). The richest and most direct source. issues 1-50 Drive — See: Donato — La Rivista Le Magnétisme (1880-1886)
  1. Preface to Cavailhon (1882) — Programmatic manifesto: «magnétiser ne signifie pas endormir»; critique of Charcot; 1875 as year zero of modern fascination. Drive — See: Édouard Cavailhon — La Fascination Magnétique (1882)
  1. Cosmopolitan article (late 1800s) — Donato in English, first person: history of the discovery, psychic theory, famous demonstrations, responses to dangers. With notes by Virgilio T. — See: Donato — L'Articolo del Cosmopolitan (con Note di Virgilio)
  1. Operational outline (Paret's notes on the journal) — Technical synthesis of the method in English: 3 steps, 3 exhaustions, 2 phases, physiological signals, magnetic education. Drive — See: Il Metodo Donato — Outline Operativo (Note di Paret)

Second-level sources: direct eyewitnesses

  1. Prof. Enrico Morselli (1886) — Neurologist. Attended all of Donato's sessions in Turin, was fascinated in person. The key passage: «conscious automatism... leaves patients awake and self-aware for longer, although it removes all voluntary control over their actions.» Drive — See: Prof. Enrico Morselli — Il Magnetismo Animale, la Fascinazione e gli Stati Ipnotici (1886)
  1. Col. Albert de Rochas (1893) — Military engineer. Describes the exact technique: oblique position, right eye into right eye, abrupt movement, initial unilateral catalepsy. Drive — See: Albert de Rochas — Testimone Oculare di Donato (Les États superficiels, 1893)
  1. G. Moréty (1886) — Editor of the journal itself. «Le Magnétisme Triomphant»: critical history of magnetism from Mesmer to Donato. — See: Magnétisme et Fascination Triomphants — Moréty e Paret
  1. Édouard Cavailhon (1882) — Journalist and personal friend of Donato. First book entirely dedicated to fascination. — See: Édouard Cavailhon — La Fascination Magnétique (1882)

Third-level sources: independent scientific researchers

  1. Morselli and Tanzi (1889) — «Psychophysiology of Hypnotism»: pulse and respiration during fascination, instrumental proof of physiological reality. — See: Fisiopsicologia dell'Ipnotismo — Morselli e Tanzi (1889)
  1. Prof. Jules Bernard Luys (1890) — Neurologist, Charité of Paris. Inherits and systematizes Donato's fascination in the clinic: miroir rotatif, 12 clinical cases, painless childbirth, transfert. — See: Prof. Jules Bernard Luys — La Fascinazione Terapeutica alla Charité
  1. Dr. Marc Dufour (1880) — 7 non-simulable signs of fascination: pupillary dilation, pulse acceleration. — See: Dottor Marc Dufour — Il Testimone Scientifico di Donato
  1. Prof. Ottolenghi (1899, on Pickmann) — Italian criminologist. Testifies about Pickmann (imitator of Donato) and the Lina M. case (spontaneous fascination). Drive — See: Pickmann e la Fascinazione in Italia — Testimonianze Oculari (1899)

Fourth-level sources: contemporary scientific journals

  1. Revue des Sciences Hypnotiques — 46 occurrences of Donato; classifies «Donato's fascination» as a recognized scientific state; «hypnose fruste»; defends Morselli. — See: La Revue des Sciences Hypnotiques e Donato
  1. Psychische Studien (1879, German) — German academic journal reporting Donato and Hansen's method in Central Europe.

Fifth-level sources: Italian transmission

  1. Marco Paret — Stories of Dr. Paret — Direct confirmation: Ghigi, Di Pisa, Virgilio T., Ghigi's unique cassette. The key phrase: «Donato's system and Ghigi's system are practically the same thing.»
  1. Di Pisa — Video «Healing Hypnosis»: explicitly cites Donato as a precursor. Chain: Dr. Grimm (1803) → Donato → Di Pisa → Paret. — See: Di Pisa — Trascrizione Video «Ipnosi Guaritrice»

Additional source: Bottey — Le Magnétisme sur sujets sains

Bottey — «Le Magnétisme sur sujets sains» — is a specific study on magnetism practiced on **healthy** subjects (not hospital hysterics), directly inspired by Donato's method. This source is fundamental because it challenges the academic prejudice (Charcot) that viewed hypnotic phenomena as pathologies of hysteria. As Donato always stated: fascination works on the healthy, not only on the sick.

Donato's method in documented summary

From the convergence of all sources, Donato's method is reconstructed with precision:

The hand technique (entry)

Donato (journal), confirmed by Morselli, De Rochas and Bernheim:

  1. The subject places their palms on Donato's hands extended horizontally
  2. Presses downward with all their strength (muscular exhaustion)
  3. Donato positions himself to the side (right with right — De Rochas)
  4. In an abrupt movement («suddenly»), pushes the subject back and immerses his right eye into the subject's right eye
  5. The subject steps back surprised — their gaze reveals the degree of impressionability
  6. Donato makes a circular movement with head and body while maintaining the devouring fixation

Diagnostic signs

Morselli (p. 282), confirmed by Dufour and Luys:

  • Reddening of the face and neck
  • Dyspnea
  • Vertigo
  • Vision narrowing to Donato's eyes alone → then merging into a single luminous point

The state produced

Morselli (cited by Ottolenghi), Donato (journal), testimony of graduate P. with Pickmann:

«Donatism leaves patients awake and self-aware for longer, although it removes all voluntary control over their actions. Fascination produces a state of conscious automatism
«the state of consciousness during hypnotic sleep remains unchanged; I have always understood what was commanded to me. I have instead observed a great alteration in the state of mental freedom.»

Maintenance and awakening

Donato (journal):

  • Continuous DV is maintained with the gaze: simply maintaining the gaze suffices
  • Light subject → can be awakened by any spectator by blowing on the eyes
  • Deep subject («fortement empoigné») → only the original operator can awaken
  • Causes of spontaneous interruption: crainte, chagrin, joie, distraction (strong emotions, distraction)
  • Awakening uses «une certaine manière de souffler, sui generis» — not obvious to external observers

The Paret Method as a worldwide continuation of Donato's method

As Moréty/Paret writes in the updated preface:

«Dr. Paret has taken up Donato's work, centered especially on demonstration, and has given it, by continuing the work of his master Di Pisa, a depth never seen before.»

The documented chain:

  • Donato (1875-1900) → public demonstration, fascination as a discipline
  • [Caravelli] → Italian transmission
  • Di Pisa → therapeutic fascination, instant hypnosis, open-eye method
  • Marco Paret / ISI-CNV → integration, therapeutic deepening, worldwide teaching

ISI-CNV is today the only school worldwide that teaches direct fascination in the tradition of Donato — integrated with contemporary neuroscientific understanding (polyvagal theory), therapeutic applications (Di Pisa) and theatrical tradition (Ghigi, Ceccarelli, Taurus).
