Jean-Michel-Pierre-Alexandre Brice de Beauregard (Sèvres, 5 June 1795 – after March 1865) is the figure who best embodies the intersection between magnetism and hermeticism. Where the magnetic page shows him as a critic of Lafontaine and guardian of the "reserved school", this page documents his initiatic side: the theorist of angelic magnetism in the tradition of Cagliostro.

Biographical data (DOCUMENTED)

Boella provides the full identity, previously uncertain:

  • Name: Jean-Michel-Pierre-Alexandre Brice de Beauregard
  • Birth: Sèvres, 5 June 1795
  • Death: after March 1865
  • Circle: frequented the Viscount of Lapasse, Charles Nodier, the philosopher Pierre Ballanche, Dr. David

Note of consistency: in Boella it is "Brice" / "Chevalier de Beauregard"; in Lafontaine (Mémoires) it is "Comte Brice de Beauregard". It is the same person.

Angelic magnetism

Boella dedicates a specific section to "The angelic magnetism of the Chevalier de Beauregard". This is a magnetism also defined as "illuminated" by the Marquis Jules-Eudes de Mirville (1802-1873).

The documented doctrinal framework:

  • As early as 1818, the scholar Joseph-Philippe-François Deleuze noted the existence of "spiritualist" magnetizers, who believed that «in a state of crisis, the soul, being freer from the bonds of matter, could enter into relation with spiritual beings», divided into good or evil.
  • Mirville noted how in Northern Europe (Germany, Sweden) mesmerism had transformed «losing all material character and ultimately resolving into faith and prayer».
  • Angelic magnetism is linked to the rituals of Cagliostro: the evocation of planetary angels through the pupil/dove.

Brice's work (correct reference)

Boella documents:

"In the Archives du magnétisme animal an incomplete study by Brice was published: Recherches historiques sur le magnétisme animal, sur la prévision somnambulique, sur la clairvoyance instinctive de l'homme, etc., with a letter by him and an introduction by Cuvillers (1823, volume VIII, pp. 7-8 and 141-172)."

The Archives du magnétisme animal (Paris 1822-1823, volumes VII-VIII) were directed by Baron Étienne-Félix d'Hénin de Cuvillers (1755-1841). Other works by Brice documented by Boella:

  • He edited the Esquisse d'une théorie des phénomènes magnétiques (Paris 1843) by Jules-Alexandre Grandvoinet (founder of the Electromagnetic Athenaeum of Lyon), under the pseudonym Dr. J.-A. Tedinngarov.
  • A work "...is-italien, par le chevalier Brice" (Paris 1836).
