Cristina di Svezia/en
Christina of Sweden (Kristina Augusta, later Kristina Alexandra; Stockholm, 8 December 1626 – Rome, 19 April 1689) — Queen of Sweden, daughter of Gustavus Adolphus, abdicant, converted to Catholicism — is the pivot around which the entire network documented in this wiki revolves. Her Roman hermetic-alchemical circle is the physical place where Kircher and Santinelli/Crassellame met; and the culture of the royal house in which she grew up was the one shaped by Johannes Bureus, tutor of her father. In Christina of Sweden, the runic-hermetic tradition of the North and the magnetic alchemy of the South become a single story.

Essential biography (DOCUMENTED)
[VERIFIED] Christina was born in Stockholm on 8 December 1626, daughter of King Gustavus Adolphus and Maria Eleonora. Queen of Sweden from 1632 (reigning from 1644), she attracted to the Swedish court René Descartes and other European scholars. She abdicated in 1654 and converted to Catholicism (a great scandal of the time), settling in Rome, where for decades she played a leading role in cultural life. She died in Rome on 19 April 1689.
The legacy of Bureus: the culture of the Swedish royal house
[VERIFIED] Christina was the daughter of Gustavus Adolphus, in whose education Johannes Bureus had taken part (together with Johan Skytte). Bureus — royal antiquarian, runic cabalist, "active Rosicrucian" — thus shaped the scholarly-mystical environment of the royal house in which Christina grew up. The chronological relationship must be emphasised: Bureus (1568-1652) died in 1652, three years before Christina arrived in Rome — he was therefore not part of the Roman circle, nor was he influenced by it. The transmission is upstream and generational: Bureus formed the royal house (Christina's father Gustavus Adolphus and her aunt), and Christina inherited that culture, later carrying it to Rome. Not a circle of contemporaries, but a chain that crosses the generations. The Nordic hermetic thread (runes, Gothic Cabala, Rosicrucianism) and the one Christina would bring to Rome are the same.
[VERIFIED] A material detail is also significant: the Kunstkammer of Emperor Rudolph II of Prague — the most celebrated hermetic-alchemical patron in Europe — passed as war booty to Christina's castle:
"The art chamber of Emperor Rudolph II, war booty from Prague, was transferred to the Tre Kronor castle, and the queen's book acquirers travelled throughout Europe." — Swedish Wikipedia, Drottning Kristina (ISI-CNV trans.)
A direct thread between the alchemical court of Prague and the future patron of the Roman circle.
The Roman Hermetic-Alchemical Cenacle (DOCUMENTED)
This is the heart of the page. The preface by Mino Gabriele to the Lux Obnubilata (Edizioni Mediterranee) documents both the personal bond with Santinelli and the composition of the circle.
[VERIFIED] The bond began in December 1655, when the queen, travelling to Rome, was a guest at Pesaro in the Santinelli house, where the marquis had founded an academy («de' Disinvolti»):
"Arrivata colà di passaggio per Roma Cristina Alessandra la Regina di Svezia, e ammirando le singolari qualità […] nel Marchese Francesco Maria, lo elesse per uno de' Gentilhuomini della sua camera […]; dichiarollo quella Maestà in breve tempo suo Cameriere Maggiore." — biography compiled by Zani, cited in Lux Obnubilata
[VERIFIED] The composition of the Roman cenacle is explicit:
"Com'è noto nei suoi soggiorni romani Cristina di Svezia si circondò di personaggi non certo privi di interessi alchemici; tra essi ricordo Francesco Borri, il Marchese Massimiliano Palombara e padre Athanasius Kircher. Il contatto diretto con questa «corte» permise senza dubbio al Santinelli di approfondire la sua «curiosità» verso la scienza di Ermete." — Lux Obnubilata, preface (M. Gabriele) 🔗 Drive
The cenacle therefore brought together:
- Athanasius Kircher — Jesuit of the Collegio Romano, author of the Magnes and of the experimentum mirabile of the hen (prehistory of hypnosis)
- Francesco Maria Santinelli (alias Crassellame) — the source of the magnetic fluid doctrine cited by Thouret, and alchemist of the Ode on the Stone
- Francesco Giuseppe Borri — famous alchemist and physician
- Massimiliano Palombara — marquis, author linked to the famous Porta Ermetica (Alchemical Gate) of Rome
[VERIFIED] The Philosophia Hermetica di Federico Gualdi (edited by Boella & Galli), citing C. Francovich, confirms that Santinelli was «admitted to the retinue of Maria Cristina of Sweden» and «the organiser of the events in honour of the queen's passage […] through Pesaro, in December 1655». 🔗 Drive
The Royal Academy (DOCUMENTED)
[VERIFIED] In Rome Cristina continued her work as a patron:
"Nel 1674 istituì un'«accademia reale» (accademia reale) […]. Manteneva una vasta corrispondenza con principi, statisti e dotti." — Swedish Wikipedia, Drottning Kristina (trans. ISI-CNV)
Her collections of books and manuscripts were «among the most distinguished of their kind at that time» — many later flowed into the Vatican holdings (Reginenses manuscripts).
Why Christina of Sweden is the central node
In a single figure converge all the threads of this wiki:
- Hermetic North: daughter of Gustavus Adolphus, educated in the milieu of Bureus (Gothic Kabbalah, runes, Scandinavian Rosicrucianism).
- Alchemical Prague: she inherits Rudolf II's Kunstkammer.
- Magnetic-Hermetic Rome: her cenacle brings together Kircher (universal magnetism, animal hypnosis) and Santinelli/Crassellame (the source of Thouret) with Borri and Palombara.
Christina of Sweden is the proof that the Hermetic tradition and the prehistory of magnetism were not two parallel currents, but the same network of people, in flesh and blood, gathered around a queen.
[RECONSTRUCTION] The thread Bureus → Gustavus Adolphus → Christina → Roman cenacle is a historical-cultural continuity reconstructed from the sources (Lux Obnubilata, Gualdi, Wikipedia SV, Åkerman for Scandinavian Rosicrucianism), not a single chain of direct citations: each link is documented, the thread that unites them is the thesis of this wiki.

Documented anecdotes
The link between hermetic alchemy and the summit of European power is documented by the case of Francesco Maria Santinelli (1627-1697), a poet and occultist known under the pseudonym «Fra Marcantonio Crassellame Chinese». According to the Philosophia Hermetica edited by Boella and Galli, Santinelli was «the organizer of the celebrations in honour of the passage of Queen Christina of Sweden through Pesaro, in December 1655», after which «the queen received him in Rome as a gentleman of the court». Alchemy was therefore not a marginal practice, but a knowledge cultivated around a sovereign who had abdicated in order to settle in Rome.
