The bibliography of Adam CrabtreeAnimal Magnetism, Early Hypnotism, and Psychical Research, 1766–1925 — is the reference academic bibliography for the history of animal magnetism, early hypnotism, and psychical research. Created for the Esalen Center for Theory & Research, it catalogs and annotates 1909 works spanning over a century and a half. In this wiki, it serves as the documentary backbone: every figure (Mesmer, Puységur, du Potet, Lafontaine, Braid, Donato…) finds its verifiable bibliographic placement here.

Structure of the bibliography

The bibliography is organized chronologically, with a historical introduction, glossary of terms, and three indexes (names, titles, subjects). Each entry is annotated (not just cited): Crabtree explains the content and importance of each work.

Key entries for this wiki (VERIFIED)

The central figures of the wiki are all cataloged and annotated by Crabtree:

Figure Cornerstone work (Crabtree) Crabtree's note
Mesmer Dissertatio physico-medica de planetarum influxu, Vienna 1766 The first work; the influence of the planets — the starting point
Puységur (1751–1825) Faithful disciple of Mesmer; discovered magnetic somnambulism
du Potet du Potet de Sennevoy (1796–1881) Developed «magnetic magic»: the fluid reintegrated into the ancient notion of universal spiritual power — «natural magic»
Deleuze Histoire critique du magnétisme animal, 2 vols., Paris 1813 Central figure in the history of animal magnetism
Bertrand Traité du somnambulisme, Paris 1823 One of the most in-depth treatises on somnambulism
James Braid Satanic Agency and Mesmerism Reviewed, Manchester 1842 Work of utmost importance; Braid founder of modern hypnotism
Lafontaine L'art de magnétiser, Paris 1847 First book by one of the most famous magnetizers of the 19th century
Donato Cavailhon, Donato et son portrait, Paris 1882 Discusses predecessors and work of the famous stage hypnotist «Donato» (Édouard d'Hont)

Note on du Potet: Crabtree's definition — the magnetic fluid reintegrated into the ancient notion of universal spiritual power and «natural magic» — is the same thesis documented in The Predecessors of Animal Magnetism — the Doctrinal Chain Documented by Thouret and in the node of Christina of Sweden: magnetism as a branch of the Hermetic tradition.

Additional works cataloged by ISI-CNV

Crabtree stops at 1925 and follows the Anglophone academic canon. ISI-CNV integrates here the works not present or under-represented in the original bibliography — in particular the Donato / fascination thread and the Hermetic-magnetic sources (Santinelli/Crassellame, Gualdi, Kircher, Bureus) that connect the two traditions. This section is under progressive construction: it will be expanded gradually with volumes as they are retrieved and digitized.

How to use this bibliography in the wiki

When a page cites a work from the period 1766–1925, it must always be verified and linked to this bibliography (Drive link to the full Crabtree file). For works outside Crabtree's scope (pre-1766 Hermetic, or post-1925, or the Donato thread), use the "Additional works cataloged by ISI-CNV" section, which grows with the digitization work.
