Template:Three pages on presence
Presence is — in the technical language of the hermetic tradition and especially of the Gruppo di UR-KRUR — the quality of being of immediate recognition, of wakeful consciousness in act, of the «command-presence» (UR 1927) that awaits no discursive mediation. It is the state of being to which all true hermetic work leads, and it is simultaneously the preliminary condition of every authentic magical operation and its fruit. It is said in the tradition that whoever is in presence already has one foot in awakening: presence is not a state among others, but the threshold open onto the plane of realization.
Everything that the Gruppo di UR-KRUR transmitted — the rituals of the Magical Papyrus, the commentary on the Tao Te Ching in Serpent Wisdom, Reghini's experience at Palazzo Strozzi of Sub Specie Interioritatis, the recognitive law of entities, the discipline on the Fedeli d'Amore, the «reintegrated by art», the doctrine of the immortal body by EA and Giudicelli, the work on corrosive waters, the two-vessel operations, image magic, the magnetic chains — is, beneath the skin and beneath language, work on presence. The techniques revolve around it; they are its different accesses, not its end.
You who read: bring yourself to presence while reading these lines. If you are far from yourself, they communicate nothing. If you are in presence, they need not explain much to you. Presence transmits itself through presence.
I. What presence is
Presence is what you are when you are not distracted from yourself. It is not an «effort of attention» added to your ordinary being, but the unveiling of what you are at bottom when the overlays of discursive thought, emotional feeling, and the agitation of restless will cease. Reghini, in Sub Specie Interioritatis (UR 1927, no. 1, pp. 1-7), describes it in its most lucid quality:
«A powerful, overwhelming, dominating, positive, original impression. […] hieratic solemnity, calm and silent power, Stellar hardness. […] A note of the eternal poem what I felt.»
Four traits recognize it, and you learn to recognize them when they are in you:
- Being there without being elsewhere. Not «thinking about being there» — being there. Thought is already a distance. Marco Paret, in the contemporary language of Presenza Integrale™, formulates the same experience: «how many times you think you are there, but in reality you are among your thoughts». When presence is alive, there are no more elsewheres
- Steady center that does not waver. EA in UR 1927 calls it «the support and inner hardness by which a power is attracted by a man and obeys him». Without this center, every operation fails. With this center, there is no need for operations: the operation is its very presence
- Wakeful consciousness in act, not meditating nor seeking. It is said «awakening to timeless rapidity» (Abraxa, UR 1927). Presence already is — it does not develop slowly; either it is there, or one has fallen
- Sub specie interioritatis — the recognition that consciousness is not inside the body, but the body is inside present consciousness, and with it everything. It is Reghini's topological inversion
Presence is not a thing you acquire — it is what you were before you dispersed yourself, and what you are when you gather yourself. Every exercise of the tradition is only a way of remembering what you already are.
II. Presence as «command-presence»
In UR 1927, no. 7-8, EA introduces a decisive technical formula: «command-presence». The full phrase: «It [the magician's mind] has no future, it is faster than antithesis, its law is the Is — the command-presence».
It is said here that the fulfilled mind does not operate through temporal sequence (cause→effect, premise→conclusion, intention→action), but through a single act in which command and presence coincide. When the magician is in presence, his very being is command: there is no need to «command something» — presence commands by its mere being. Cf. the page Magia dellImmagine sect. IV for the same doctrine applied to magical action on the other: the image is projected «in an occult and inescapable way» — not because something is forced, but because the operator's presence is already the action.
The Taoist says the same thing in the formula of wu wei (無爲, non-action that acts). Laotze in Iagla's commentary in Serpent Wisdom (UR 1927):
«Good wrestler uses no violence, good victor does not wrestle, good director does not direct, good walker leaves no trace, good holder needs no lock, good imprisoner asks no ropes. The truly victorious army must not «fight» — it has never admitted struggle, possibility of struggle. […] This power is possessed by those «who have been bitten by the Dragon»: with this they direct, with this they operate, invisible and silent.»
They are the same thing: command-presence, wu wei, gaze of the Fulfilled One, command of the Kremmerzian magician. The sign that presence is alive in you is not doing more: it is doing less with greater effects. When you notice that things come to meet you without your chasing them, know that presence is operating in you.
III. The vocative style: «you» who read
The writings of the Gruppo di UR-KRUR are written in a vocative style — the disciple is always directly addressed as «you», not described as «the practitioner» or «the operator» from an impersonal third person. It is a precise technical choice of the tradition: presence communicates itself through appeal. When the text says «you», it calls you now, and asks you to be present now. If you read distracted, the text does not operate; if you read present, the text acts upon you.
Examples of the UR vocative:
- «You must detach — first by imagining it and then by realizing it — a superior principle» — Abraxa, The Three Ways, UR 1927
- «If you proceed in these practices, you will see knowledge born ever more distinct in you» — Abraxa, Magia dellImmagine, UR 1927
- «Know that the rapidity of the magical act is such that for the operator's consciousness it is impossible in the first times to grasp it» — Abraxa, UR 1927
- «Keep above all in mind that success in magic is never the result of an effort» — Abraxa, UR 1927
The «you» of UR is not literary rhetoric. It is a call. The tradition knows that knowledge written in the third person remains external to the reader — information without grip. Knowledge written in the second person, when the author speaks from his presence to the equally present reader, produces a field of relationship in which presence transmits itself. It is the same science by which the ritual of the Magical Papyrus directly invokes the powers «Hail, Lord...» or by which a living master speaks to the disciple looking him in the eyes rather than explaining abstractly. The word in presence acts.
For this reason, whoever comments on UR-KRUR today must preserve its vocative style if they wish to preserve its efficacy. Translating everything into impersonal-academic language means extinguishing the fire of the text.
IV. Presence as recognition — the «sub specie interioritatis»
Reghini, in Sub Specie Interioritatis (UR 1927, no. 1), gave the most lucid description that the twentieth-century Italian tradition has produced of what happens in full presence. The experience is of recognition — not of acquisition, not of construction, not of development. Suddenly Reghini realizes what had always been true but which he had not seen: his body does not contain his consciousness, but his consciousness «contains» the body (in the non-geometric sense he specifies). Material reality continues to exist, it is not abolished; but its status changes — it becomes a modality of the Whole among others, recognized from within a consciousness that is itself the Whole.
This experience is full presence. What the tradition calls «recognition» (Skt. pratyabhijñā, Tibetan language rangshar, wu in Zen, ma'rifa in Sufism, «opening one's eyes upon a world of new meanings» in Iagla's words in La Legge degli Enti) is precisely this: seeing what was already there, but which ordinary distraction covered. Presence discovers more than it produces.
Reghini insists on two points that must be fixed for every disciple:
- Presence is not the fruit of philosophical speculation — it can happen to anyone, even without conceptual preparation. Discursive thought «cannot lead further than a simple conceptual abstraction, of a more or less negative character, and incapable of suggesting or provoking the direct lived experience»
- Presence cannot be forced: it is disposed. The techniques of the Gruppo di UR — discipline, rites, exercises — do not mechanically produce presence, but remove the obstacles to its spontaneous emergence. It is always present (like the «dull and equal hum produced by countless insects» of Reghini), and manifests itself when the habitual attention that covers it is suspended
V. Presence as the foundation of the «reintegrated by art» — the «Sons of Hermes»
When the texts of the Gruppo di UR-KRUR speak of the «reintegrated by art», the «son of Hermes», the «Fulfilled One», the «dvija», the realized initiate, they describe always — under different vocabularies — a being who has come to be stable presence. Not one who has presence among other qualities; is presence, and everything he does is presence expressing itself in actions, words, gestures, simple being alongside.
UR 1928 (article on the «chain» and on the path of the Fulfilled One) formulates it with great precision:
«Initiate — that is, according to the double meaning of the Greek term, fulfilled — come to be «one who is» — without wanting anything, with his mere presence, he is rich in invisible gifts for «others»: like the sun, he could not but give light: it would be impossible for him, because by doing so he would cease to be what he is. And it is necessary that such beings exist.»
Here the decisive thing is said: presence radiates without intention, like the sun radiates light. The Fulfilled One does not «decide» to help; does not «strive» to transmit; does not «want» to be a master. He is; and in his being, he is already help, transmission, magisterium. His mere presence in the world «changes the world» because the reality of the world is also determined by the quality of the presence within it.
The «son of Hermes» is therefore one who has realized in himself a quality of presence that is itself the completed hermetic work. The philosopher's stone is nothing other than the operator: it is the operator become stable presence. The corrosive waters have sublimated themselves within, the subtle bodies have integrated, the kundalini has risen, the Caduceus is awakened, the two currents have unified — and the sign that all this has occurred is the presence that remains stable in every situation.
Hence the formula of the tradition you have received, and which crosses this entire wiki: whoever is in presence already has one foot in awakening. Not because presence is awakening (cfr. Il Risveglio for the dimension of further fulfillment), but because it is the threshold onto it. Without presence, no awakening possible; with stable presence, awakening becomes the natural maturation.
VI. Presence is the guiding thread of all techniques
Every technique of the UR-KRUR tradition and of the current School is a path to presence or a manifestation of presence. The techniques change language, references, corporeal or material supports, cultural contexts — but their center is always there. Let us see how presence is Ariadne's thread in the already published pages of the cluster:
- Apathanatismos — the ritual of the seven Logoi of the Magical Papyrus is a progressive intensification of presence: each Logos asks the celebrant for a new quality of being-there, up to the seventh where presence coincides with union with the supreme God. «Breathe from the divine, gazing fixedly into your spirit» — it is pure instruction in presence
- Le Tre Vie — Magia Mistica Yoga — the «creating the being-two» of Abraxa is the act of positioning oneself in presence by separating it from automatic identification with instinctive life, thought, feeling. The three ways are distinguished by where they place the acting principle, but all three require preliminary presence as a condition
- Sub Specie Interioritatis — it is presence itself, lived in its fullest form. The text is a direct testimony of presence in act
- Saggezza Serpentina — Dvija Caduceo Kundalini — the dvija, the «twice-born», is one who is reborn to presence after having died to the distracted way of being. The qualities of the Fulfilled One according to Laotze («calm, firm, first fixed them all, as pure objects of contemplation») are descriptions of stable presence
- Magia dellImmagine — the magical image becomes operative only in presence: without presence, the image is dreaming fantasy; with presence, it is effective projection. The «command-presence» is the exact formula of this passage
- Le Acque Corrosive — the danger of corrosive waters lies in the absence of preliminary presence in the operator. If presence is stable, the waters can accelerate the work; if it is absent, the waters dissolve instead of transmuting
- La Legge degli Enti — the reactions of the subtle world are neutralized in the pure presence of the Fulfilled One, who «offers no grip». Absolute protection is absolute presence
- Operazioni Magiche a Due Vasi — Sdoppiamento — the binary operation requires that both operators — the solar one and the «pupil» — be present in their respective positions. The operation is a structure of double polarized presence
- Morfologia Occulta — the three bodily systems become perceptible through presence progressively extended from the brain to the blood, from the blood to the bones, from the bones to the breath
- Le Catene Magnetiche di Loggia — the chain is a field of coordinated presences that amplify each other. The single member brings his own presence to the chain; the chain multiplies the presence of each
In each of these techniques, remove presence and everything falls. Techniques alone, without living presence in the operator, are empty shells — literature, archaeology, curiosity. With presence, the same technique becomes a path of real transformation.
VII. Giudicelli on presence in the «Corps Immortel»
Jean-Pierre Giudicelli de Cressac Bachelerie, in La Doctrine du Corps Immortel (Arché, 1988), places presence at the center of the work of the immortal body. His formulation — consistent with that of the Gruppo di UR-KRUR but expressed in the language of the French chivalric tradition — affirms that the immortal body is not constructed: it is recognized through a work of progressively more stable presence, up to the point where presence is itself the realized immortal body.
For Giudicelli, every exercise of the work — control of the sexual act, rectification of ordinary life, awareness of the instant, practice of cinnabar, trial of the metal — is presence cultivated in a specific domain of life. The «trial of the metal» (cfr. La Doctrine du Corps Immortel sect. III) is the test of how much your presence remains intact before the weights of ordinary life: if you yield, presence was not stable; if you hold, presence has been structured.
The Giudicelli–EA identity is doctrinally explicit: Giudicelli's «immortal body», EA's «one and triple body of the Lord of the Three Worlds» in UR 1927 (cfr. La Doctrine du Corps Immortel sect. III-bis), the «dharmakāya» of the Buddhist trikāya, the Gnostic «robe of Glory» — they are the flower of stable presence. When presence becomes irreversible, one has obtained what the tradition names with these different terms.
VIII. How to recognize presence in oneself
You who read, verify in your being now the following signs of presence. They are not abstract doctrine — they are perceptible markers:
- The body is one — not in pieces. You feel your feet on the floor and simultaneously the breath in your chest and simultaneously the nape of your neck; you feel everywhere without concentrating punctually on one point to the exclusion of others
- Thought is quiet — not absent, but no longer imperious. There is space between one thought and another; you are not the thought, you are the space in which thoughts arise
- The gaze is open — it sees the entire visual field simultaneously, not focused on one point nor dispersed everywhere. It is Abraxa's «sovereign eye»
- Breath is natural — not forced, not controlled, not interrupted by fear or agitation; it flows by itself, felt but not commanded
- Time dilates — events appear to you slower than they appear in distraction. There is time to respond; there is time to choose; there is time to be
- The other is perceived whole — if you are with someone, you truly see them, you do not project them. Their presence reaches you in your presence, and a field is established
- The fluid is dense — the magnetic fluid of which all magnetism speaks is perceived as present in the body, as a warm density in the hands, in the chest, around the head. It is not imagined — it is perceived
If these signs are in you, you are in presence now. If they are missing, you have lost nothing — presence is always there underneath, it is enough to remember to return. The tradition says it in different ways: «remember» (Sufi, dhikr), «awaken» (Taoists, wu), «gather oneself» (Hermetics), «Stop» (Method Paret).
And you be present to the fact that you are not present — that very recognition is already a return to presence.
VIII-bis. Presence in the three planes: the constructive pyramid
Presence is not a monolithic quality: it manifests simultaneously on the three planes of the human being — physical, vital, psychic — and is constructed proceeding from the bottom up like a pyramid. This reading, developed by the Paret-ISI-CNV School in its axis-page Morfologia Occulta (sections IV-bis on Spirituslehre, VI-bis on the three planes, VI-ter on the polyvagal autonomic system), corresponds precisely to the traditional doctrine of the Gruppo di UR-KRUR and to what Klier has philologically documented for Renaissance physiology.
The three planes of presence:
- Physical presence — the dorsal vagus active, the abdomen calm, the breath full and low, the grounding of weight, diffuse kinesthetic perception. It is the base without which the other two forms of presence are not possible. Corresponds to the spiritus naturalis of the Galenic-Paracelsian tradition
- Vital presence — the ventral vagus active, the heart-lungs in modulated breath, the living voice, the radiating magnetic fluid, open and calm eye contact. It is the plane of Calor Innatus, where authentic magnetic energy develops. Corresponds to the spiritus vitalis
- Psychic presence — the cortex available but not dominant, thought clear without being agitated, the magical image alive without being invasive, representation that serves presence rather than replacing it. Corresponds to the spiritus animalis
You who read: verify in your being now on which plane your presence is most alive. If you feel the body but not the heat, you are in the base but have not developed energy. If you feel the heat but the mind is agitated, you have developed energy but have not integrated the summit. If you have clear thought but the body is tense, you are in cortical activation without the base and the body — it is the average modern state, and it is not presence but its mental imitation.
Full presence — that which the Fulfilled One of the tradition possesses stably — is integration of the three planes in the same quality of being. The body is one, energy circulates, the mind is clear; and all three are present in the same instant without any prevailing over the others. Hence the irradiation of the Fulfilled One described in UR 1928 («with his mere presence, he is rich in invisible gifts for others»): his magnetism passes through all three planes simultaneously, and for this reason it is irresistible and effortless.
The constructive principle is simple: start from the physical, build the vital, integrate the psychic. The reverse does not work. Modernity that starts from the head remains in the head, in permanent sympathetic activation, without ever grounding itself or truly igniting. The initiatic tradition has always reversed this order: first the body, then the fire, then the light — nigredo, albedo, rubedo — liver, heart, brain, archea (cfr. Morfologia Occulta sect. IV-ter on the alchemical path as fluidic transit).
