Journal du magnétisme — La Rivista di du Potet/en

The Journal du magnétisme was the leading European journal dedicated to animal magnetism in the second half of the 19th century. Founded and directed by Baron du Potet, it was published in Paris starting in 1845.

Characteristics and structure

From the title page of the Manuel de l'étudiant magnétiseur (1850), OCR verified from the primary source Drive, the Journal was:

• «Rédigé par une société de magnétiseurs et de médecins, sous la direction de M. le baron Du Potet»
• Bimonthly publication (on the 10th and 25th of each month)
• Price: 10 francs/year in Paris, 12 in the departments
• From 1845 to 1849, 8 volumes were published; the complete collection cost 31.50 francs

Historical role

For three decades, the Journal du magnétisme was the main point of reference for the European magnetic community. It published:

• Clinical cases and documented healings
• Magnetic theories (fluid vs. imagination debate)
• Polemics with academic medicine
• Experiences of somnambulism and «clairvoyance»
• International correspondence among magnetizers

Du Potet directed it from 1845 until the year of his death (1881) — thirty-six years of uninterrupted publication. As Dr. Paret writes, «from 1820 until 1881 he never ceased to struggle, publishing numerous volumes and directing the interesting Journal du magnétisme».

Relationship with the three intertwined histories

The Journal is the meeting point of the three narratives:

• Scientific magnetism: publishes clinical cases, theories, academic debates
• Fascination: publishes experiences of gaze, passes, phenomena of attraction
• Secret societies: it is the media of the Parisian esoteric-magnetic milieu; du Potet publishes his theses on «magic» there
