Jean-Michel-Pierre-Alexandre Brice de Beauregard (Sèvres, 5 June 1795 – after March 1865) is one of the key figures where the magnetic tradition and the hermetic tradition reveal themselves to be the same network of people. Academic historiography has misunderstood him by separating "science" and "esotericism"; documentary sources instead show a single character with two complementary faces.

The Two Faces of Beauregard

Important documentary correction: Archives, not Annales

Template:Avviso

The historical study by Brice was not published in the Annales but in the Archives du magnétisme animal:

"In the Archives du magnétisme animal, an incomplete study by Brice was published: Recherches historiques sur le magnétisme animal, sur la prévision somnambulique, sur la clairvoyance instinctive de l'homme, etc., with a letter from him and an introduction by Cuvillers (1823, volume VIII, pp. 7-8 and 141-172)." — Boella & Galli

The Archives du magnétisme animal (Paris 1822-1823, volumes VII-VIII) were directed by Baron Étienne-Félix d'Hénin de Cuvillers (1755-1841). This explains why the OCR of the Annales 1814-1816 did not find the name: the correct source is a different journal. The in-depth pages should be aligned with this correction.

Other works documented by Boella:

  • Brice edited the Esquisse d'une théorie des phénomènes magnétiques (Paris 1843) by Jules-Alexandre Grandvoinet, under the pseudonym "Dr. J.-A. Tedinngarov".
  • A work "...is-italien, par le chevalier Brice" (Paris 1836).

Why Beauregard is a Bridge Figure

Beauregard embodies the central thesis of this wiki: magnetism and hermeticism were a continuum. As the guardian of the "reserved school", he criticized the public demonstrations of Lafontaine (magnetic face); as a theorist of "angelic magnetism", he inserted himself into the initiatic tradition of Cagliostro and the Golden Rosicrucians (hermetic face). See the Portale della Tradizione Ermetica for the overall picture.
