The Television Technique is a hypnotic induction technique from the book of Di Pisa, probably of Caravelli origin. It is based on the use of a guided internal image — the subject's home television — to occupy the mind and open the channel with the operator.
It is the direct ancestor of the Ball of Light: same logic, different content.
The original technique
- "Watch the pendulum I have in my hand... keep looking at it and your eyes will get tired... they will become heavy... very heavy... Now your eyes are very heavy... close them! Now imagine your television at home turned off... do you see it?... Good... Now I press the button and make funny movie images appear on your television... do you see them? Laurel and Hardy are getting big pies in the face... do you see it?... Good... Now they slip and hit their bottoms... you laugh... and you have fun... good... Now the movie is over and you are very sleepy... you are so tired... relaxed..."
- — Erminio Di Pisa, L’Ipnosi dalla A alla Zeta
How it works
- The pendulum tires the eyes physically (Caravelli imprint, slow)
- Closing the eyes brings the subject inside themselves
- The television turned off: neutral, familiar, non-threatening image
- Turning it on creates pleasant expectation
- The comedic scenes produce positive emotion — the subject laughs, defenses fall
- The end of the movie naturally brings sleep
The mind is completely occupied by the internal image: there is no room for resistance.
From television to the ball of light
The Ball of Light uses the same structure but essentialized for the therapeutic context: the TV is replaced by a ball of heat, the pendulum disappears, the positive emotion becomes a direct physical sensation.
