Hand Reading / Neurological Channel is a non-verbal communication technique of the Paret Method that allows identifying which neurological channel is active in a person through observation of the position and movements of the hands. It represents a practical application of polyvagal theory integrated with the three types of touch in the context of fascination and non-verbal presence.
Definition
Hand Reading is a calibration protocol that uses the hands as somatic indicators of the neurological state of the observed subject. In the Paret Method, the hands reveal which branch of the autonomic nervous system is predominant at the moment of interaction, allowing the practitioner to adapt communication and hieratic presence in real time. Hands do not lie: they directly manifest sympathetic or parasympathetic activation, also revealing states of dissociation or emotional anchoring.
When to use
- During fascination sessions to monitor communication effectiveness
- In initial calibration to understand the client's neurological profile
- In non-verbal hypnosis contexts to assess the level of trance or resistance
- In Mesmerismus® situations to adapt the energetic flow to real bodily reactions
- In body language reading during negotiations, coaching, therapy
Components and steps
- Observation of initial position: note where the subject's hands naturally place themselves (open, closed, on the body, in space)
- Identification of direction: hands turned outward = sympathetic activation; hands caressing the body = parasympathetic activation
- Monitoring of micro-movements: gestures that gesticulate or freeze indicate a dissociative state or neurological conflict
- Correlation with tec_polyvagal_theory: interpret which vagal branch (ventral, dorsal, or sympathetic) governs the movement
- Application of tec_tocchi_tre_tipi: adapt touch and proximity based on the identified channel
- Real-time feedback: modify presence and communicative flow according to the collected data
Distinctions
- vs eye movement reading: while eye movements reveal strategies for accessing mental information, hand reading reveals the autonomic neurological state and true somatic disposition
- vs classic NLP rapport: the Paret Method is not limited to verbal mirroring, but integrates hand reading with polyvagal theory for a deeper, unconscious rapport
- vs generic posture observation: hand reading is specifically focused on the upper limbs as privileged sensors of dissociation and emotional binding
Courses where it is taught

- [to be confirmed by Marco] - other advanced modules of the Paret Method
Notes
- Hand reading is more effective the more the practitioner has developed their own presence and sensory sensitivity; it requires training of peripheral perception
- Caution: do not confuse emotional blocking with voluntary blocking; dissociation is detected by slight tremor or unconscious rigidity, not by simple motor control
- Ecological application: use this reading to facilitate the client towards more integrated channels (ventral vagal), not for manipulative control
