Laterality Test (thumbs/arms) is a technique of the Method Paret in the hypnosis category. It consists of the conscious crossing of fingers and arms to reveal unconscious preferences linked to personality traits and to trigger light trance states through neuromuscular and sensory conflict.
Definition
In the Paret method, the Laterality Test represents a diagnostic-inductive tool that exploits the positioning of interlocked hands to access the subject's unconscious neurological maps. The crossing of the thumbs (whichever emerges spontaneously) and the dominant position of the arms reveal neuropsychological orientations: left prevalence indicates emotional and intuitive processes, while right dominance points to logical and rational functions. The technique operates simultaneously as a detection test and as a trance inducer, exploiting bodily asymmetry to create a state of controlled confusion.
When to use
- In the initial assessment phase to understand the subject's representational structure
- As a light hypnotic induction in preparation for deeper interventions
- In educational contexts to teach the recognition of unconscious patterns through the body
- In magnetism and presence sessions to calibrate communicative orientation (emotional vs rational)
- Before hierarchical or quantum techniques to map the subject's available resources
Components and steps
- Invite the subject to interlock their fingers naturally, without awareness of the result
- Observe which thumb emerges in a dominant position (left or right)
- Have them cross their arms in the same way, noting which shoulder comes forward
- Compare the consistency between thumb dominance and arm positioning
- Use the emerged information to calibrate subsequent tone, speed, and communicative register
- Anchor the state of mild bodily confusion as a hypnotic resource to deepen the trance
Distinctions
- vs classic suggestibility tests: the Paret method bases the test on unconscious laterality rather than verbal compliance; it reveals neurological structures, not just psychological availability
- vs Ericksonian limb-crossing techniques: Paret integrates the diagnostic component (pattern reading) with direct inductive effects through Paret-specific neuromuscular conflict
- vs traditional hemispheric analysis: the technique operates within the paradigm of magnetism and presence, not academic neuropsychology [to be confirmed by Marco]
Courses where it is taught
- Mesmerismus® lesson 5 – Basic module on the fundamentals of the test
- Hyperavancado PT – Advanced applications in presence and quantum techniques contexts
Notes
- The consistency between the dominant thumb and arm positioning is clinically significant; discrepancies indicate representational conflicts useful for subsequent strategy
- Avoid communicating in advance which side will be observed, to maintain access to unconscious data
- The test naturally generates light trance; it is not contraindicated, but must be recognized as an inducer to modulate subsequent depth
