Fascinazione (basic technique) is actually, in the Paret method, a magnetic massage: a sequence of passes on the subject's face, with eyes closed, for energetic purposes and deep relaxation.

Important terminological note: the historical name "Fascinazione (basic technique)" can cause confusion. Fascinazione proper in the Paret method is a technique performed with the gaze (gaze technique). The one described here is instead the magnetic massage preparatory to mesmeric work, in which there is no eye contact because the subject keeps their eyes closed.

Definition

Magnetic massage is a technique of light contact or close hand passes over the face of the seated or lying subject, with eyes closed. The operator's hand follows precise trajectories: from the forehead to the chin, from the center to the temples, along the eyebrow, along the profile of the nose and cheekbone. It is not a physical massage: pressure is minimal or absent, and the intended effect is energetic, not muscular.

When it is used

  • As a preparatory induction for sessions of Mesmerismus®, non-verbal hypnosis, regression
  • To induce deep relaxation without the need for verbal language
  • In therapeutic sessions where the subject is stressed or resistant to conscious relaxation
  • As a didactic demonstration of the concept of the mesmeric "magnetic pass"
  • In preparation for ecstatic, somnambulistic, or deep trance states

Components and steps

  1. Subject seated or lying down, in a comfortable position, eyes closed
  2. Operator standing or seated frontally/laterally, in a state of active presence
  3. Start with broad passes from the head to the torso at a distance of a few centimeters
  4. Specific passes on the face: forehead → temples → cheekbones → jaw → chin
  5. Slow and regular rhythm, synchronized with the subject's breath
  6. Conclusion with a pass from the top of the head downwards, accompanying the energy

Distinctions

  • vs Fascinazione (gaze): here there is no gaze, the subject has eyes closed
  • vs Physiotherapy massage: minimal/no pressure, energetic rather than muscular purpose
  • vs Passes Mesmerici: it is a specific application to the face, not the whole body
  • vs Verbal hypnosis: there is no verbal induction, it works on the body

Courses where it is taught

  • Mesmerismus® (introductory module, weeks 3-4)
  • Master IT (passes and non-verbal inductions module)
  • Advanced (technique refinement)

Notes

  • Common mistake (students): confusing this magnetic massage with true fascinazione (with the gaze). They are two distinct techniques both belonging to the Paret mesmeric corpus
  • Common mistake (practitioners): excessive physical pressure — the value of the technique lies in the light energetic pass, not in tissue manipulation
  • Contraindications: particular attention with subjects who have facial trauma or tactile hypersensitivity
