The Arcana Arcanorum (lit. "secrets of the secrets") are the most reserved initiatic-operative core of Egyptian Freemasonry, and according to the authors of the tradition they constitute its very purpose. They are not "one of the contents" of the Rite of Misraïm-Memphis: they are its goal — the point toward which the entire structure of ritual degrees is oriented. Their decisive characteristic is to institutionally precede the Egyptian Rite: they come from an older operative tradition (gnosis, Greco-Egyptian hermetic magic, internal alchemy) of which the Egyptian Rite is a vehicle, not an origin.

I. What the Arcana Arcanorum Are

In other words, the structure of the degrees (95 of Misraïm, 96 of Memphis, the subsequent reduced scales) is a pedagogical-ritual envelope at the end of which lies what precedes Freemasonry itself: an older operative science.

[VERIFIED] Boyer specifies that the Arcana Arcanorum exceed the Masonic framework: «nous sortons ici de l'aspect maçonnique [...] Le système complet des Arcana Arcanorum, dont la maçonnerie n'a recueilli que des fragments» — Freemasonry has only gathered fragments of the complete system. The same point is reiterated when Boyer states that there are initiatic currents «n'utilisant pas l'appellation Arcana Arcanorum, [qui] détiennent» essentially the same science.

II. Giudicelli's Operative Definition

[VERIFIED] Jean-Pierre Giudicelli de Cressac Bachèlerie — the reference source on the matter — articulates the Arcana Arcanorum into three families of practices:

1. Theurgy (Chaldeo-Egyptian Angelic Kabbalah)

Ritual invocations: the systems of invocations of the 4, of the 7, and the great operation of the 72. It is the level where the Egyptian Rite directly meets late-antique theurgic magic (Iamblichus, De Mysteriis; Neoplatonic and magical-Hebraic tradition), medieval angelic kabbalah (the 72 divine names) and the Christian-hermetic operative tradition of the Renaissance.

2. Metallic Alchemies

On the level of the "external path" — concrete practice on metallic matter — the identified documents indicate:

  • the antimony path as the main path;
  • the Salamander path;
  • the cinnabar path.

[VERIFIED] Giudicelli specifies that these paths are «à la fois de la voie externe et de la voie interne», both for pedagogical reasons (external matter as a mirror of inner work) and for operative reasons (actual operations on metallic matter that trigger internal phenomena).

3. Internal Alchemies

This is the heart of the Arcana Arcanorum. The internal alchemies — those that tradition calls Paths of Immortality or Real Paths — operate on the actual transformation of the human being.

This point is decisive for the wiki's hermetic cluster: the Arcana Arcanorum, through internal alchemy, anchor themselves directly to the Greco-Egyptian gnostic-hermetic magic that the wiki has already documented — see IAO nella tradizione e nella Scuola for the names of power, the Greek Magical Papyri and Nag Hammadi. The two operative traditions — magical voices of IAO and internal alchemy — are two aspects of the same work, reconnected in the Egyptian Rite.

III. The Three "Paths" of Immortality (Giudicelli)

[VERIFIED] A distinctive characteristic of the Arcana Arcanorum in Giudicelli's reading is that they do not aim at a single pole. There are at least three orientations of the Real Path, symbolized by three mythical archetypes:

Orientation Mythical Archetype Operative Meaning
Sur-humanity Heracles magical path of the Hero (strength, trials, conquest)
More-than-humanity Christ / Orpheus luminous transfiguration, redemption, creator-song
Non-humanity Osiris / Dionysus dissolution and regeneration, "initiatic death" and return

This is a point of the highest value: the Arcana Arcanorum are not a single dogmatic path, but a system with differentiated orientations. The choice of the operative axis depends on the intimate nature of the initiate.

IV. The Régime of Naples: The Two Phases (Isiac and Osirian)

[VERIFIED] Boyer documents a specific operative structure of the so-called Régime of Naples — the southern Italian current of Egyptian Freemasonry that preserved the Arcana Arcanorum (from the Caetani-Sermoneta house to Kremmerz and beyond):

«Les A:.A:. du Régime de Naples introduisent à une alchimie interne de tradition égyptienne en deux phases: l'une isiaque, l'autre osirienne. C'est dans ce dernier aspect des alchimies internes que nous retrouvons les aspects plus spécifiquement osiriens des A:.A:.»

The two phases:

  • Isiac phase — the opening: the initiate works under the sign of Isis (mother, knowledge, reconnection with the source). It is the phase of reconstruction of inner integrity.
  • Osirian phase — the fulfillment: the initiate undergoes dissolution (the dismemberment of Osiris) to reach regeneration. It is the properly non-human phase in Giudicelli's terms, where the condition that traditions call "immortality" is achieved.

This tripartite-binary structure (Isis opening, Osiris completing) mirrors the structure of the great alchemical operation (nigredo-rubedo with albedo as passage) and the vocal structure of IAO.

V. Historical Transmission: From Greco-Egyptian Magic to Kremmerz

[VERIFIED] Boyer reconstructs a chain of transmission:

Era Vehicle of Transmission
Late Hellenistic Antiquity Greek Magical Papyri, Papyrus Bruce (Gnostic), Nag Hammadi texts
Middle Ages / Renaissance Christian hermetic tradition, alchemists, angelic kabbalah
18th century Cagliostro and the «Haute Maçonnerie Égyptienne» — see Cagliostro e il Rito Egizio
19th century Rite of Misraïm (Naples, Bédarride brothers), then Rite of Memphis (Marconis), Anglo-international merger of Yarker 1876
Late 19th – 20th Giuliano Kremmerz (1861–1929) and the Therapeutic and Magical Fraternity of Myriam ("Grand Orient égyptien" — Neapolitan milieu)
20th–21st Souverain Grand Sanctuaire Adriatique (Caracciolo), surviving Régime de Naples, research by Boyer, Giudicelli, Monereau

VI. Placement with Respect to Mesmerism, Alchemy, and Chivalry

Given the key point indicated by Marco — "every article must make clear how it stands in relation to the mesmeric tradition or the older alchemical tradition" — this page must be explicit on the point:

With respect to alchemy

The Arcana Arcanorum are alchemy, in an integral sense: external metallic practice (antimony, salamander, cinnabar) and internal alchemy (Real Paths, Paths of Immortality). Their relationship with the older alchemical tradition documented elsewhere on the wiki (see Borri, Gualdi, Palombara) is not one of derivation or analogy: it is one of identity of core. Borri and Gualdi are custodians in the 17th century of the same knowledge that the Arcana Arcanorum codify within the Egyptian Rite in the 18th.

With respect to mesmerism

The relationship with mesmerism is more subtle. The Arcana Arcanorum are not 18th-century animal magnetism — they are older and more complete. However, the Lodges of the Society of Harmony documented on the wiki (see La Massoneria Mesmerica, Malta node 1785, Société de la Concorde of Lyon) historically intercept the Arcana through the institutional framework of the Egyptian Rite: 18th-century magnetism was a revealer (in a photographic sense) of pneumatological operations that the Arcana had preserved for centuries in a different language. When Cagliostro puts the "doves" into trance in the Adoption lodge, he is working with operative tools that the A∴A∴ contained before the mesmeric codification.

With respect to chivalry

The link with the néo-chevalerie of Templar derivation passes through the three Giudicellian paths: in particular, the path of the Hero / Heracles is the chivalric pole of the Arcana Arcanorum — it is the path that best connects to Templar-chivalric ethics and iconography. This is why the Péladan current – Adrien Péladan père, Joséphin Péladan – was able to synthesize the heritage of the néo-Templerie with that of the Rose-Croix of Toulouse and with elements of the Egyptian Rite within a single Ordre de la Rose-Croix du Temple et du Graal (1890).

VII. Living Practice in the School

Declared section: what follows is operative tradition of the Paret School (ISI-CNV), not historiographic reconstruction.

In the living tradition transmitted in the School, the elements of the Arcana Arcanorum are not preserved as "historical heritage" but are alive in current didactics, declined in concrete practices that the disciple works on with the master:

  • The vocal-corporeal axis (see IAO) is one of the gateways to the internal alchemies of the A∴A∴: the voice that touches the three centers (head-heart-coccyx) inaugurates that work on the "four bodies of man" that Boyer presents in section E of his book (pp. 213 ff.).
  • The two Isiac and Osirian phases of the Régime of Naples correspond, in the School's didactics, to two complementary movements: a phase of reconstruction and nourishment (Isis as inner mother, reconnection with the vital source, the practices of Myriam described by Kremmerz as magical therapeutics) and a phase of crossing and transfiguration (Osiris, initiatic dismemberment, recomposition on a new plane).
  • The three paths of Giudicelli (Heracles / Christ-Orpheus / Osiris-Dionysus) find in the School a declination that orients the work of the individual disciple according to his inner predisposition — the same path is not proposed to everyone, because «l'Être n'est pas nécessairement orienté vers un pôle unique».
  • The cardinal principle that Boyer and Giudicelli reiterate — the Arcana Arcanorum precede and transcend Freemasonry — corresponds exactly to the positioning of the School: the initiatic tradition is not a prisoner of an institution, it is an operative science that the institution can convey but of which it is not the owner.

IX. Chronology of Written Sources on the Arcana Arcanorum

A decisive historiographic point emerging from the converging sources on Drive (Labour, Caillet, Giudicelli, Loggia Aletheia, Rombauts manuscript): before 1986 the Arcana Arcanorum had been spoken of very rarely in written sources.

  • 1816: delivery to the commission of the Grand Orient de France of a manuscript compendium of the four degrees (degrees 87-88-89-90 of the Naples Scale)
  • 1820: Ragon loses the originals of the manuscript during a sea voyage (Ventura, I Riti di Misraïm e Memphis, Rome 1975, p. 22)
  • 1844: Jean-Marie Ragon, Cours philosophiques de la franc-maçonnerie — first published testimony
  • 1930: Rombauts and Mallinger (Belgian Egyptian Center) — oral then written commentary on the rituals (see below)
  • 1934: the International Assembly of the M-M Rites obligatorily replaces the Régime of Naples with the Bédarride regime — decisive institutional act recognizing the superiority of the Neapolitan line
  • 1975: Gastone Ventura (Gran Hierophante of the Rite of Misraïm), dedicated chapter in I Riti di Misraïm e Memphis
  • 1986-1989: Monereau relaunches the theme (Le Monde inconnu Nov. 1986; Les secrets hermétiques de la Franc-maçonnerie..., 1989)
  • 1988: Giudicelli, Pour la Rose Rouge et la Croix d'Or

Fundamental Historical Distinction: Bédarride (Kabbalistic) vs Naples (Hermetic-Alchemical)

[VERIFIED] The Labour source (cited in Historical Origins of the Arcana Arcanorum) clarifies: «From a Masonic point of view, one must distinguish between the system of the Bédarride brothers based on Kabbalah and the Régime of Naples, which constitutes the true system of the Arcana Arcanorum».

[VERIFIED] Already Ragon had defined the rituals of degrees 87, 88, 89 of the Bédarride brothers as «a fraudulent derision, born from the ignorance of the Bédarride brothers». The Régime of Naples contains the true operative corpus; the French Bédarride system (of the brothers Gad, Joseph and Marc who founded Misraïm in Paris in 1814) is a later kabbalistic version and — according to Ragon himself — deriving from misunderstanding.

This clarifies a point that the page Le Filiazioni dei Riti Egizi left in chiaroscuro: the true and operative filiation of the Arcana Arcanorum does not pass through the Bédarride system of 90 kabbalistic degrees (Paris 1814) but through the Neapolitan line preserved by the Osiridean Egyptian Order. The 1934 decision — obligatory replacement of the Régime of Naples for the Bédarride regime — is the institutional recognition of this historical truth.

Greek-Pythagorean Origin According to Giudicelli

[VERIFIED] Giudicelli (cited in Historical Origins of the Arcana Arcanorum) specifies: «their country of origin: Greece, which gathered the Egyptian heritage; these strands are more complete, and some of them expressed themselves in Pythagorean circles, there existing a secret Pythagorean path that gives the certainty of immortality». This connects directly to La Voie des Sons (explicit link with Pythagoreanism) and to the ritual testimonies of the Régime of Naples that use Pythagorean symbolism (the Great Tetraktys, the Ypsilon, the 36 = cubes of 1+2+3 — see Tuileur dei Gradi 87-90 del Rito di Misraïm for ritual detail).

A part of the filiations «chose to emigrate to America», where they are still present — a fact that also explains the link with the FUDOSI/Clymer current of Pennsylvania (cf. Le Filiazioni dei Riti Egizi sec. Axis V).
