Marius Koning, studente di medicina, si sottopose alla fascinazione per la prima volta il 5 ottobre 1886. Al primo tentativo Donato lo dichiarò insensibile. Al secondo, su sua richiesta, Donato accettò di fissarlo più a lungo:&lt;br /&gt;

Poi Donato gli fregò il braccio destro — che divenne insensibile — e introdusse uno spillone sotto la pelle: «je n&amp;#039;en sentis rien, lorsque vous me piquâtes une épingle d&amp;#039;argent sous la peau, et néanmoins je savais que vous me piquiez». Non sentì nulla, ma &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;sapeva&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; che veniva punto — la coscienza era intatta, la sensazione abolita.&lt;br /&gt;

Il pittore Omeri Coppens fu ipnotizzato a distanza. Qualcuno nel pubblico tentò di pinzargli le gambe per verificare se il sonno fosse reale — e il giorno dopo si accorse di avere le gambe coperte di lividi:&lt;br /&gt;

Il campo visivo si restringe progressivamente fino a un unico punto — l&amp;#039;occhio di Donato. Tutto il resto scompare. Questa progressiva riduzione del campo visivo a un unico punto luminoso è una delle caratteristiche distintive della fascinazione rispetto all&amp;#039;ipnosi ordinaria.&lt;br /&gt;

La caratteristica più sorprendente che emerge da tutte le testimonianze è questa: il soggetto è &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;pienamente cosciente&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; di quello che gli accade, ma non può intervenire. Sa che viene punto ma non sente dolore. Sa di seguire Donato ma non può fermarsi. Sa di non potersi rialzare ma non trova la forza.&lt;br /&gt;

Donato stesso lo scrive: «The subject is in no way asleep; he possesses full consciousness of his acts and, brought back to the normal state by a word or a breath, he can relate the different experiments he has submitted to.»&lt;br /&gt;

È questo il nucleo dirompente della fascinazione rispetto a tutti i modelli precedenti: non è il sonno, non è l&amp;#039;incoscienza, non è la suggestione post-ipnotica.
